The short answer

The FBISE paper pattern 2027 (for the 2026 to 2027 session) has three parts: Section A (MCQs on a bubble sheet), Section B (short answers) and Section C (long answers). In Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science, the new pattern makes MCQs 50% of the theory paper, starting with Class 9 and Class 11. All papers are set from SLOs, not one textbook.

Last updated 10 October 2026. Everything below comes from FBISE notifications and model papers on fbise.edu.pk. Patterns can change, so check the model paper for your exact subject and class before you plan.

What is new in the FBISE paper pattern 2027?

FBISE introduced a 50% MCQs and 50% descriptive pattern for five core subjects: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science. The Board of Governors approved it on 28 July 2026, and FBISE notified it on 7 August 2026 (FBISE notification). It is being rolled out in phases:

  1. Second Annual Examination 2026: SSC-I and HSSC-I fresh students appearing for the first time under the Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024 (1,200 marks).
  2. First Annual Examination 2027: all SSC-I and HSSC-I students under the 2024 scheme. SSC-II and HSSC-II students also use it, but only if they already took the Second Annual 2026 on the new pattern.
  3. First Annual Examination 2028 onwards: SSC-II and HSSC-II students who sat SSC-I or HSSC-I on the new pattern.

In plain words: if you are in Class 9 or 1st year (Class 11) now, your 2027 science and maths papers will be 50% MCQs. Most Class 10 and 2nd year (Class 12) students sitting in 2027 continue with the existing pattern. Improvement and failure candidates in these five subjects also stay on the existing pattern, according to FBISE's HSSC 2nd Annual 2026 notice.

What does "SLO-based paper" mean in FBISE?

An SLO-based paper means FBISE sets questions from the Student Learning Outcomes in each subject's Assessment Framework, not from a single textbook. FBISE's August 2024 notification says only SLOs marked "summative" come in the board exam. Formative SLOs are for classroom learning.

This matters because a question can describe a situation you have never seen in your book. The new scenario-based MCQs do exactly this: a short passage or diagram, then several MCQs on it. Ratta of book lines will not cover that. Understanding the SLO will.

What is the FBISE Class 9 paper pattern for science and maths?

The FBISE SSC-I (Class 9) Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science papers on the 50% pattern have 60 theory marks: 30 for MCQs and 30 for written answers. The total time is 3 hours, according to the SSC-I Physics model paper, which lists the same structure for all four subjects.

FBISE SSC-I (Class 9), 50% patternPhysics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer ScienceMathematics
Theory marks6075
Section A (MCQs)60 MCQs x 0.5 = 30 marks48 MCQs x 0.75 = 36 marks
MCQ types40 straight, 20 scenario-based32 straight, 16 scenario-based
Time for Section A1 hour 20 minutes1 hour 20 minutes
Section B6 questions x 3 marks = 187 questions x 3 marks = 21
Section C2 questions x 6 marks = 123 questions x 6 marks = 18
Time for Sections B and C1 hour 40 minutes1 hour 40 minutes

Every Section B and C question has an internal choice (an "OR" option). Under the 2024 scheme, science subjects with practicals are 80% theory and 20% practical (FBISE, July 2025), so Physics is 75 marks in total: 60 theory plus 15 practical. Mathematics has no practical and is 75 marks of theory (Maths SSC-I model paper).

What is the FBISE Class 11 (1st year) paper pattern?

The FBISE HSSC-I (Class 11) science papers on the 50% pattern have 80 theory marks, with 80 MCQs worth 40 marks. Mathematics has 100 marks, with 64 MCQs worth 48 marks. In HSSC-I the MCQ section gets the longer slot: 1 hour 40 minutes.

FBISE HSSC-I (Class 11), 50% patternPhysics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer ScienceMathematics

What is the FBISE Class 10 paper pattern for 2027?

Most FBISE SSC-II (Class 10) students sitting in 2027 follow the existing pattern, which has a small MCQ section of 20 minutes and a long written section of 2 hours 40 minutes. The 2025 model papers (Scheme of Studies 2006) show this:

FBISE SSC-II (Class 10), existing patternSection A (MCQs)Section BSection CTime for B and C
Physics12 marks, 20 minutes33 marks (11 x 3, with OR choices)20 marks2 hours 40 minutes

If you took SSC-I in the Second Annual 2026 on the new pattern, your SSC-II science and maths papers follow the 50% pattern instead. Because most Class 10 marks are written, presentation decides top grades; see how to aim for 95% in FBISE Class 10.

What is the FBISE Class 12 (2nd year) paper pattern?

The FBISE HSSC-II Physics model paper (existing pattern) has Section A worth 17 marks in 25 minutes, Section B worth 42 marks (14 short questions of 3 marks, each with an OR choice) and Section C worth 26 marks, with 2 hours 45 minutes for B and C (HSSC-II Physics). HSSC-II English is 100 marks: 20 MCQs in 25 minutes, then 40 marks each for Sections B and C in 2 hours 35 minutes (HSSC-II English).

What is the FBISE English and Urdu paper pattern?

FBISE English and Urdu papers are not part of the 50% MCQ change, so their MCQ section stays small (15 or 20 marks). Most marks come from reading and writing.

  • English SSC-I (Class 9), 75 marks: 15 MCQs; a comprehension passage with a compulsory summary; poetry; grammar; then a formal letter (8), a paragraph of 80 to 100 words (6) and a dialogue (6) (model paper).
  • English SSC-II (Class 10), 75 marks: a precis, poetry, grammar, a narrative of 100 to 125 words (6) and an essay of 200 to 250 words (10).
  • English HSSC-I, 100 marks: a formal letter or job application (8), idioms, narration and punctuation (16) and a report (8), among others (model paper).
  • Urdu SSC-II, 75 marks: 15 MCQs, then prose and poetry comprehension and grammar (34), then tashreeh of prose, nazm and ghazal (4 marks each), a letter, application or report (5) and an essay of 300 to 350 words (9).

The English frameworks aim for about 30% knowledge, 50% understanding and 20% application questions. So half the paper tests whether you understood, not whether you memorised. For format help, see our guides on English essay and letter format and how to write Urdu tashreeh.

How is the FBISE result graded now?

FBISE now grades results on a scale from A++ (96 to 100%) down to D (40 to 50%). Below 40% is "Ungraded", and the student reappears in that paper. The scale applies to SSC-I and HSSC-I from the First Annual Examinations 2026 and to SSC-II and HSSC-II from 2027 (FBISE notification, 7 October 2025).

GradePercentage
A++96 to 100
A+91 to 95
A86 to 90
B++81 to 85
B+76 to 80
B71 to 75
C+61 to 70
C51 to 60
D40 to 50

How should you prepare for the new FBISE paper pattern?

Prepare for the FBISE 50% MCQ pattern by practising MCQs daily, under time, and by reading scenarios carefully. Sixty MCQs in 80 minutes gives you 80 seconds each, and scenario MCQs take longer than straight ones.

  1. Download your Assessment Framework from the model paper page and tick off summative SLOs as you learn them.
  2. Practise scenario MCQs. Read the stem first, then the question, then the options.
  3. Keep writing long answers. Fifty percent is still descriptive, and Section C questions carry 6 to 8 marks each.
  4. Do full timed papers in the last eight weeks. See how to use past papers for a method that works with the new pattern.

For a full week-by-week plan from now to the 2027 papers, read how to prepare for FBISE 2027.

Qurricular is a board exam prep app for Pakistani students from Class 9 to A Level. Its FBISE practice includes MCQs, short and long questions and full papers in the Federal Board's pattern, mapped to the SLOs.
