The short answer
Urdu tashreeh kaise likhein? Start with the reference (poet or writer and the poem or lesson), then give the central idea (مرکزی خیال), then explain the lines in your own words, including any hidden meaning, imagery or poetic device, and end with a short conclusion. In FBISE Class 10 Urdu, each tashreeh is worth 4 marks, so aim for half a page to a page of clear, connected explanation.

Last updated 10 October 2026. Paper details are from FBISE's 2025 SSC-II Urdu Assessment Framework and model paper on fbise.edu.pk. The step-by-step method below is how teachers commonly teach tashreeh; follow your own teacher's guidance where it differs.
What is tashreeh, and how is it different from translation?
Tashreeh means explaining a couplet (شعر) or a prose passage (اقتباس) in depth, in your own words. Translation tells what the words say. Tashreeh tells what the writer means, why it matters, and how the words create that meaning.
| Term | What it is | Length |
|---|---|---|
| تشریح (tashreeh) | Explaining a specific couplet or passage in depth | Half to one page |
| مفہوم (mafhoom) | The plain meaning of the lines | 2 to 3 sentences |
| مرکزی خیال (markazi khayal) | The core idea of a poem or passage | 1 to 2 sentences |
| خلاصہ (khulasa) | Summary of a whole text | A paragraph |
How many marks is tashreeh in the FBISE Urdu paper?
In FBISE's 2025 SSC-II (Class 10) Urdu model paper, Section C has three tashreeh questions of 4 marks each, so tashreeh is worth 12 of the 75 marks (FBISE Urdu SSC-II framework):
- Q3, prose (حصہ نثر): two passages, each with at least five to six points that need explaining (وضاحت طلب نکات). You explain one.
- Q4, nazm (نظم): two extracts of two couplets each. You explain one.
- Q5, ghazal (غزل): two extracts of two couplets each from the ghazals in your course. You explain one.
The same section also has a letter, application or report (5 marks) and an essay of 300 to 350 words with five points (9 marks). Section B tests poetry and prose comprehension too, with questions asked "with reference to the couplet" (بہ حوالہ شعر). Check the model paper for your own class, since Class 9, 11 and 12 papers differ.
Urdu tashreeh kaise likhein for poetry: what are the five steps?
Write poetry tashreeh in five steps. This layout is easy for an examiner to mark:
- حوالہ (reference): name the poet and, if you know it, the poem or ghazal. One line is enough.
- مرکزی خیال (central idea): one or two sentences on what the couplet is about.
- تشریح (explanation): explain the first line, then the second, then how they connect. Bring out the hidden meaning, not just the surface.
- فنی خوبیاں (poetic beauty), briefly: point out a simile (تشبیہ), metaphor (استعارہ), contrast (تضاد) or other device if there is one. These are also part of the grammar section of the paper, so you already know them.
- نتیجہ (conclusion): one sentence on the message. Add a matching couplet (ہم معنی شعر) only if you are sure of it.
What does a good tashreeh look like? (Worked example)
Here is a well-known couplet by Mirza Ghalib, used only as a practice example. It may or may not be in your course.
ہزاروں خواہشیں ایسی کہ ہر خواہش پہ دم نکلے
بہت نکلے مرے ارمان لیکن پھر بھی کم نکلے
Roman: Hazaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dam nikle / Bohat nikle mere armaan lekin phir bhi kam nikle
Plain meaning: "I have thousands of desires, each so intense it could take my breath away. Many of my wishes came true, and yet they still felt too few."
Why this earns marks: it gives the reference, states one clear central idea, explains each line (مصرع) separately and then together, names a device (the contrast, تضاد, between بہت and کم), and ends with a clear message. It is short, but every sentence does work.
How do you write tashreeh of a prose passage?
Write prose tashreeh by finding the explanation points first, then explaining them in order. FBISE's framework says each prose passage will contain at least five to six points that need explaining, so your job is to spot them.
- حوالۂ متن (reference): the lesson (سبق) and writer (مصنف).
- Underline the key points in the passage in pencil: difficult words, ideas, examples, a moral.
- Explain each point in your own words, in the same order as the passage.
- Connect them to the writer's main message.
- Conclude in one sentence.
Do not copy the passage back. Rewriting the same sentences is not tashreeh and does not earn the explanation marks.
What are the common tashreeh mistakes?
The most common tashreeh mistakes are translating without explaining, skipping one line of the couplet, writing long introductions, misquoting couplets and running out of time.
- Only translating the words without the deeper meaning.
- Explaining one line and forgetting the other.
- Long introductions about the poet's life. One line of reference is enough; the marks are in the explanation.
- Misquoting the couplet or a related couplet. Write it exactly or skip the extra couplet.
- Writing in Roman Urdu or with weak handwriting. Write clearly in Urdu script.
- Running out of time because Section B took too long. Plan about 10 minutes for each 4-mark tashreeh.
How should you practise tashreeh before the board exam?
Practise one tashreeh every other day using couplets and passages from your course. Write it, then compare with your notes or ask your teacher to check it. Learn the central idea of every poem and lesson in your syllabus as one or two sentences each; that alone makes most tashreeh questions much easier. Use timed past paper practice in the last two months, and see the FBISE paper pattern guide for the full Urdu paper. For the rest of your Class 9 and 10 plan, read how to prepare for matric 2027.

Frequently asked questions
What is tashreeh in Urdu?
Tashreeh (تشریح) means explaining a couplet or a prose passage in your own words: its meaning, its deeper idea, and the poet's or writer's point. It goes beyond a word-for-word translation.
How many marks is tashreeh in the FBISE Class 10 Urdu paper?
In FBISE's 2025 SSC-II Urdu model paper, Section C has three tashreeh questions of 4 marks each: one prose passage, one nazm extract and one ghazal extract. You choose one of two options in each.
How long should a tashreeh answer be?
For a 4-mark tashreeh, half a page to a page is usually enough. Cover the meaning, the deeper idea and one example; extra length without new points does not add marks.
Should I add a related couplet in tashreeh?
A matching couplet (ہم معنی شعر) can strengthen your answer if you remember it correctly. A wrong or misquoted couplet weakens it, so skip it if unsure.
What is the difference between tashreeh and khulasa?
Khulasa (خلاصہ) is a short summary of a whole text. Tashreeh explains a specific couplet or passage in depth, including its hidden meaning and poetic devices.
