The short answer

Choosing pre-medical or pre-engineering comes down to Biology or Mathematics: pick pre-medical if you enjoy Biology and want a health career such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or allied health, and pick pre-engineering if you enjoy Mathematics and Physics problem solving and want engineering, architecture, computing or the physical sciences. Pre-medical means learning a lot of detailed content; pre-engineering means a lot of problem solving. If you are unsure, pick the subjects you actually like studying, because you will study them every day for two years.

Last updated 10 October 2026. Group and subject details are from FBISE's Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024. Other boards may differ slightly.

What subjects are in pre-medical and pre-engineering?

Under FBISE's Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024, the Medical Group takes Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and the Engineering Group takes Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (FBISE Scheme of Studies). Both also take the compulsory subjects, including English, Urdu, Islamic Education and Pakistan Studies.

Each elective is 100 marks per year with 80 for theory and 20 for practical, under FBISE's 2024 scheme (FBISE notification, July 2025).

So the real choice is Biology or Mathematics. Everything else is shared.

What other groups can you choose after matric?

Besides pre-medical and pre-engineering, FBISE offers a General Science / Computer Science group and a Humanities group. In the General Science / Computer Science group you choose three subjects from Physics, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science and Entrepreneurship, and Statistics (FBISE Scheme of Studies). This is the group many people still call "ICS". The Humanities group offers a wide range, from English Literature and Urdu to Civics, Philosophy and foreign languages.

These are full, respected options, not backups. If you love computing, economics or languages, they can be the best fit.

Which careers does each group lead to?

Each group keeps certain doors open. Broadly:

  • Pre-medical leads towards medicine (MBBS), dentistry (BDS), pharmacy, nursing, physiotherapy, other allied health sciences, biotechnology, microbiology, agriculture and life sciences.
  • Pre-engineering leads towards engineering (civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical and more), architecture, computer science and software, mathematics, physics, and many business and data degrees.
  • General Science / Computer Science leads towards computer science, software engineering, data science, economics and many business degrees, depending on the subjects you pick.

Exact eligibility depends on each university and degree, so always check the admission requirements of the programmes you are aiming for. Qurricular is a board exam prep app for Pakistani students from Class 9 to A Level, and its free career counsellor (no signup) suggests careers that fit you and shows the road from Class 9 to each one.

Do you need an entry test after FSc?

Most medical and engineering admissions in Pakistan need an entry test as well as your FSc marks. Medical and dental colleges use the MDCAT, which is regulated by the PMDC. Reports say the PMDC set a minimum of 65% in FSc pre-medical or equivalent to sit the MDCAT for the 2025 to 2026 admissions (result.pk report); confirm the current rule on the PMDC's official site. Engineering universities run their own tests; for example, UET Lahore runs the ECAT, which FBISE's own website listed for 2026.

Because rules and dates change every year, check the official body and university directly in the year you apply.

Which is harder, pre-medical or pre-engineering?

Neither is simply harder; they are hard in different ways. Pre-medical asks you to understand and remember a large amount of detail, especially in Biology. Pre-engineering asks you to solve unfamiliar problems, especially in Mathematics and Physics numericals. Ask yourself which kind of difficulty you enjoy wrestling with, because that is the one you will push through on a tired evening.

How do you decide between pre-medical and pre-engineering?

Decide between pre-medical and pre-engineering by answering five honest questions about your interests, marks and goals:

  1. Which matric subject did I enjoy most, Biology or Mathematics? Enjoyment predicts effort better than anything.
  2. What did my marks say? Look at your Class 9 and 10 results in Biology and Mathematics, but do not let one paper decide your life.
  3. Which careers excite me, and do they need Biology or Mathematics? Check two or three real degree requirements.
  4. Am I choosing for me or for someone else? Family advice matters and comes from love. Discuss it openly, with your interests and strengths on the table.
  5. Can I keep options open? If you are torn, see whether your college allows an additional subject, and check what each university accepts.

What if you choose and later change your mind?

If you change your mind early in 1st year, talk to your college quickly, because switching groups gets harder as the year goes on. FBISE also allows candidates to appear in additional subjects in line with IBCC advice in some cases; check the latest FBISE notice and ask your institution. After FSc, many degrees accept students from more than one group, so one choice rarely closes every door.

How do you get ready for 1st year in either group?

Whichever group you pick, strengthen your basics in the summer after matric. For pre-engineering, revise algebra and trigonometry and practise physics numericals step by step. For pre-medical, revise Class 9 and 10 Biology diagrams and Chemistry basics. Then follow a steady plan like the one in how to prepare for FSc 2027. If your matric result is just out, read what to do after the FBISE result.

Qurricular covers FBISE Class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Computer Science, so you can start 1st year with practice that matches your group.

Frequently asked questions

What subjects are in pre-medical and pre-engineering?

Under FBISE's Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024, the Medical Group takes Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and the Engineering Group takes Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, alongside compulsory subjects like English and Urdu.

Which is harder, pre-medical or pre-engineering?

Neither is simply harder. Pre-medical has more content to learn and remember, mainly in Biology. Pre-engineering has more problem solving, mainly in Mathematics. Pick the kind of hard you enjoy.

Can a pre-medical student become an engineer?

Most engineering programmes ask for Mathematics at intermediate level, so moving from pre-medical to engineering is difficult without it. If engineering is a real possibility, check university eligibility before you choose.

Do I need an entry test after FSc?

For most medical and engineering admissions, yes. Medical colleges use the MDCAT, and engineering universities run their own tests such as UET's ECAT. Check the official body for current eligibility and dates.

What if I like computers more than medicine or engineering?

Look at FBISE's General Science / Computer Science group, which lets you choose from subjects like Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science and Entrepreneurship, Economics and Statistics.
