About

Nursing is a healthcare profession where trained professionals look after patients, administer medicines, monitor vital signs, assist in surgeries, and educate people about health. In Pakistan, nurses work in hospitals, clinics, community health centres, and even abroad. The field offers specialisations like cardiac, paediatric, or emergency nursing. After FSc Pre-Medical, students can join a 4-year BS Nursing programme or a 3-year diploma in nursing. Licensing by PNMC (Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council) is needed to practise.

A day in the life

FSc Pre-Medical

Subjects that matter most: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English

FSc Pre-Medical is the standard route. Some universities accept FA with Biology, but FSc Pre-Medical keeps more doors open. You also need good marks in Matric/O Level Sciences.

Future outlook

Nursing demand in Pakistan is growing steadily because of expanding healthcare infrastructure, a rising population, and increasing awareness of health. The government is investing in nursing education and hiring under the Sehat Sahulat Programme. However, the supply of qualified nurses is still low, creating many job opportunities. Private hospitals and international recruitment (Middle East, UK) are additional drivers.

Class 9–10: Build the science base that gets you into FSc Pre-Medical — the standard route to BS Nursing.

Milestones

  1. Class 9, start of year

    Choose Science subjects and confirm your board

    Make sure you are enrolled in Science with Biology, Chemistry, Physics in your board (FBISE, provincial board, AKU-EB or O Level). If your school offers a choice, pick Biology — it is compulsory for FSc Pre-Medical.

  2. End of Class 9

    Finish Class 9 syllabus strong

    End Class 9 with 80%+ in sciences. These concepts (cells, atoms, motion) are the foundation of Class 10 and later FSc Biology and Chemistry.

  3. Class 10, mid-year

    Decide your target: FSc Pre-Medical (or A Level Bio+Chem)

    By mid-Class 10, confirm your stream: FSc Pre-Medical is the standard route to BS Nursing. Shortlist 3–4 colleges near you and note their last year's admission marks.

  4. Class 10, January onwards

    Past-paper practice phase

    From January, solve at least 5 years of past papers for Biology, Chemistry, Physics and English under timed conditions, marked against your board's scheme.

  5. Spring, Class 10

    Board exams

    Sit your Matric or O Level exams in spring. Target 80%+ overall with Biology as your top subject — these marks count for FSc admission and later for nursing college merit.

  6. Summer after Class 10

    Apply to FSc Pre-Medical colleges

    As soon as results come, apply to your shortlisted colleges for FSc Pre-Medical before their deadlines close — good colleges fill fast after results.

What to focus on

  • Score high in Matric/O Level sciences — these marks decide your FSc admissionClass 9 onwards

    Nursing colleges admit on FSc Pre-Medical, and FSc admission depends on your Matric/O Level result. Biology, Chemistry, Physics and English are the subjects that matter most. Aim for 80%+ overall, with Biology your strongest subject, because BS Nursing programmes (Aga Khan, DUHS, KEMU, Shifa) later weigh both Matric and FSc marks.

  • Choose FSc Pre-Medical as your target groupClass 10, second half

    The standard route to nursing in Pakistan is FSc Pre-Medical (Biology, Chemistry, Physics). Some universities accept FA with Biology, but Pre-Medical keeps every BS Nursing door open. In Class 10, research which colleges near you offer Pre-Medical, what their admission cutoffs were last year, and whether you need to apply right after results.

  • Build daily study habits before board examsClass 10, from January

    Board exams come in spring of Class 10. Make a timetable that covers every chapter of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with past papers from your own board (FBISE, Punjab, Sindh, KPK, Balochistan or AKU-EB) solved weekly from January. Learn to write answers in the marking-scheme style — examiners reward labelled diagrams and point-wise answers.

Tests and deadlines

  • Matric or O Level board examsSpring, Class 10

    Your board exams (FBISE, Punjab, Sindh, KPK, Balochistan, AKU-EB boards, or Cambridge O Level) are the only exams that matter now. No MDCAT or nursing entry test at this stage. Your science marks here feed directly into FSc Pre-Medical admission, which later feeds BS Nursing admission.

    Nurses document patient notes, talk to doctors and families, and clear interviews for BS Nursing admission. Read one English article daily and practise writing short summaries. Free: BBC Learning English (bbclearningenglish.com).

  • Basic biology study techniqueClass 9 onwards

    Nursing builds on human biology — anatomy, physiology, diseases. Learn to draw and label diagrams (heart, digestive system) from your Class 9–10 textbook from memory. Free: Khan Academy Health & Medicine section (khanacademy.org).

  • First aid basicsClass 10, holidays

    Early exposure to first aid (bleeding, burns, CPR basics) builds genuine interest in nursing and looks strong in later admission interviews. Free: St John Ambulance Pakistan courses, or IFRC first-aid videos on YouTube.

  • Digital literacyAnytime

    Nursing colleges and hospitals use digital records and online portals. Learn typing and basic computer use now. Free: TypingClub (typingclub.com) and Google's Applied Digital Skills.

Competitions

  • National Biology Olympiad / science olympiadsAnytime in Class 9–10

    Pakistani students in Class 9–10 can join national science olympiads and school-level science quizzes. Ask your science teacher which olympiads your school registers for — winning or even participating strengthens your profile for competitive nursing colleges later.

People to know

Most first jobs and internships come through people. Start early, and keep it simple.

  • Talk to a nurse you know

    Ask a family friend, relative or your school's dispensary nurse what a real shift looks like — night duties, patient care, specialisations like cardiac or paediatric nursing. One honest conversation now tells you more than months of browsing, and this person can become your mentor through FSc and admission season.

  • Visit a hospital or health camp

    Many hospitals and NGOs run free medical camps and blood donation drives that welcome student volunteers. Spending a day observing nurses at work confirms your interest early and gives you a real story for future admission interviews.

  • Join school science/health society

    If your school has a science club, first-aid society or Red Crescent youth group, join it and take a small responsibility. Leadership roles now build the confidence and communication skills nursing interviews later reward.

What it costs

Government school Matric is nearly free (a few thousand PKR per year in fees/exam charges). Private schools charge roughly 2,000–15,000 PKR per month. O Level schools cost more, around 15,000–40,000 PKR per month. Board exam fees are a few thousand PKR.
