Your roadmap

Class 9–10: Build the Matric/O Level base that later unlocks I.Com, BBA and a marketing career.

Milestones

  1. First term of Class 9

Settle into the Class 9 syllabus and build a study routine

Fix daily study hours, get past papers from your board (FBISE/Punjab/Sindh etc.), and target 80%+ in Class 9 finals so Class 10 pressure is lower.

  2. During Class 9

    Pick up two marketing-adjacent skills

Canva design and one social media page of your own. Small, free, done alongside school.

  3. Class 9

Join one school society and speak publicly at least once

Debate, media society or event committee — get on stage once this year.

  4. Class 10, by January

Complete the full Class 10 syllabus once

Finish the entire board syllabus by January so spring is pure revision with past papers.

  5. Class 10, January to March

    Past-paper revision cycle

Solve at least 5 years of board past papers per subject, timed. This is the single biggest Matric score lever.

  6. Spring, end of Class 10

Sit the board / O Level exams

Aim for 75%+ (or A/A* at O Level) to keep BBA and good-college options wide open.

  7. After Class 10 results

    Make the stream decision

With results in hand, choose I.Com or A Level (Economics/Business/Maths) as the natural marketing path, or FSc/ICS if you prefer — all streams can reach BS Marketing with 50%+ marks.

What to focus on

  • Matric marks matter more than you thinkBoth years, board exams in spring of Class 10

For BS Marketing or BBA at IBA Karachi, LUMS and Punjab University, universities look at your Matric (or O Level) marks plus Intermediate marks. Many require at least 50% overall in Matric, and competitive BBA programmes effectively want 70%+. Strong Class 9 and 10 results also feed into your Intermediate admission merit at good colleges.

  • Give English extra weightThroughout Class 9–10

Marketing runs on communication. Matric English and O Level English language papers build the writing and speaking base you will need for BBA entrance interviews, presentations and later ad copy. Aim for 80%+ in English, not just a pass.

  • Keep Mathematics strong even if you lean commerceClass 9 and 10

I.Com includes Business Mathematics and Accounting, and BBA marketing later needs basic statistics and budget math. Scoring well in Matric Mathematics now keeps every stream open — Pre-Medical, Pre-Engineering, ICS, I.Com and FA — when you make the group choice after Class 10.

  • Start thinking about your group choiceDecide after Class 10 results

After Matric you will pick FSc Pre-Medical, FSc Pre-Engineering, ICS, I.Com, FA or A Level subjects. For a marketing career, I.Com or A Level (with Economics, Business, Maths) gives the cleanest path to BBA/BS Marketing. Use Class 9–10 to test what you enjoy: numbers, writing, or people.

Tests and deadlines

  • Board exams (Matric / SSC)Spring, end of Class 10

FBISE, Punjab, Sindh, KPK, Balochistan or AKU-EB board exams at the end of Class 10, held in spring. These marks stay on your record forever and count toward Intermediate admission and later university merit.

  • O Level exams (Cambridge)May–June or Oct–Nov sessions

If you are on the O Level track, you sit Cambridge O Level subjects in sessions through Class 10–11. English and Mathematics grades matter most for later BBA admissions and equivalence through IBCC.

  • School/college entry assessmentsAfter Class 10 results

No national entry test is needed at this stage for a marketing path. But good colleges (Punjab Group of Colleges, Beaconhouse, KIPS etc.) run their own admission tests for FSc/I.Com — usually Matric-level English, Maths and General Science.

Skills to build

  • Written and spoken EnglishStart now, daily habit

Marketing managers live in briefs, presentations and campaigns. Practise essay writing and speaking daily.

  • Basic graphic design (Canva)Start in Class 9

Every marketer makes posters and social posts. Canva is free and Class 9 students can learn it in a weekend.

  • Social media content creationClass 9–10

Try running a small page — a hobby, a school club, a cricket page. Learn what captions, timing and visuals get engagement.

  • Public speakingThroughout Class 9–10

Join debates, morning assemblies and school presentations. Confidence in front of people is a marketing manager's core tool.

  • Basic spreadsheetsStart in Class 10

Google Sheets or Excel basics — tables, simple formulas, charts. Marketing budgets and campaign reports are all spreadsheets.

  • Observing brands criticallyDaily, from Class 9

Start noticing why you prefer one biscuit brand or telecom company. Write down what their ads do. This habit becomes marketing instinct.

Competitions

  • Kangourou sans Frontières (Kangaroo Math) PakistanHeld annually around March; register through school

A friendly international maths competition open to school students including Class 9–10. Good practice for the quantitative side of commerce and business maths.

  • School-level debating and declamation contestsYear-round, school and city level

Not a formal olympiad, but inter-school debates, MUNs and speech contests build the persuasion and public speaking at the heart of marketing. Look for local MUN conferences in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad.

People to know

Most first jobs and internships come through people. Start early, and keep it simple.

  • Join school societies

Media society, literary society, debating club or the event-organising committee. Organising a school fun fair or bake sale is real marketing experience — promotion, posters, audience.

  • Create a LinkedIn profile in Class 10

A simple profile with your school, interests and a line about wanting to study business. Follow Pakistani brands like Careem, Daraz, Tapal and marketing pages. Comment thoughtfully once a week.

  • Find one mentor

Ask a teacher, a cousin doing BBA, or a family friend in sales/marketing how they chose their path. One 30-minute conversation now saves years of confusion later.

  • Attend a youth event or expo

Look for free youth festivals, book fairs and startup events in your city (e.g. events at Expo Centres, NUST/IBA open days). Watch how brands set up stalls and attract crowds.

What it costs

Government school Matric is nearly free; private school Class 9–10 runs roughly PKR 5,000–25,000 per month. O Level schools cost PKR 15,000–50,000+ per month plus Cambridge exam fees of roughly PKR 15,000–25,000 per subject. Academy/tuition centres add PKR 3,000–10,000 per subject per month.
