For a graphic designer, English matters most at this stage: design briefs, client emails and Fiverr/Upwork profiles are all in English, and it is compulsory in every board exam. Computer Science (where offered) builds the base for design software later.

Start your portfolio before board examsClass 9 onward

Design careers are judged on a portfolio, not just marks. Save every poster, card, logo or school-event banner you make — even hand-drawn ones. Photograph or scan them into one folder. By the time you apply to NCA or Indus Valley after Class 12, you will need a drawing test and portfolio; starting in Class 9 gives you two years of material.

Keep one art habit aliveDaily, Class 9–10

Even if your school has no art class, sketch 15–20 minutes daily — objects around the house, lettering, simple logos. NCA and Indus Valley entrance tests check observation drawing and creative thinking, and those skills come from years of practice, not a crash course.

Plan the stream decision earlyClass 10, before board results

After Matric/O Level you will choose FA (Fine Arts/Humanities), ICS (Computer Science), FSc or A Levels. For design, FA with Art or ICS with Computer Science are the most natural routes, but any stream keeps the door open. Check now which colleges near you offer Art subjects in FA and what their admission cut-offs were last year.

Board exams (Matric / O Level)Spring, Class 10

Your Matric or O Level percentage is the first number on every future admission form — colleges use it for FA/ICS/FSc admission, and NCA-type art programmes eventually look at your full academic record. No design-specific entry test exists at this stage; the board exam is the only exam that matters.

Drawing and sketching basicsDaily, 15–20 minutes

Observation drawing, shading and lettering are the foundation of every design entrance test. Learn free on YouTube: channels like Proko (drawing fundamentals) and Alphonso Dunn.

Canva (start here)Class 9 onward

Canva is free in the browser and teaches layout, colour and typography without cost. Make your school's event posters, Eid cards and presentation slides in it.

Photoshop and Illustrator basicsClass 10 onward

The industry standard tools. Adobe offers free tutorials on its website; on YouTube, PiXimperfect (Photoshop) and The Futur / Dansky (Illustrator) teach beginners free. Use free trials or older versions to practise.

Figma (UI and layout)Class 10 onward

Figma is free for students and increasingly demanded by Pakistani software houses. Learn the basics from Figma's own free Learn course on their website.

English for clientsOngoing

Freelancing on Fiverr and Upwork runs on clear written English. Practise by writing short descriptions of your own artwork in English; free learning on YouTube (English lessons) and BBC Learning English website.

School and local art/poster competitionsAnytime in Class 9–10

Enter every art, poster and calligraphy competition your school, board or local organisations run — Daira and various galleries in Karachi and Lahore hold youth art shows. Winning pieces go straight into your portfolio and teach you deadlines.

National and international drawing/poster contestsThroughout the year

Look for poster-design contests around national days (Independence Day, Kashmir Day) run by newspapers and NGOs, and international children's art contests open to Pakistani students. Each entry is portfolio practice.
