About

A game developer writes the code that makes video games work — movement, physics, controls, menus, multiplayer and performance. In Pakistan most work is mobile game development for local studios and foreign clients, using engines like Unity (C#) and Unreal (C++). The job mixes programming with creativity: you work alongside artists and designers to turn a game idea into something people actually play.

A day in the life

  1. 1Write and test C# or C++ code for gameplay features in Unity or Unreal
  2. 2Fix bugs reported by testers before a build goes out
  3. 3Meet designers and artists to review levels, animations and UI
  4. 4Optimise the game so it runs smoothly on low-end Android phones
  5. 5Push code to the team repository and review teammates' work
  6. 6Read player feedback and patch issues after release

Is this for you

You'll likely enjoy it if

  • You enjoy coding and maths/logic problems
  • You love games and are curious how they are made
  • You like building things and seeing them run
  • You can stick with a hard problem for hours
  • You work well in a team with artists and designers

The hard parts, honestly

  • Crunch periods near release dates with long hours
  • Many ideas get cut; you often build things that never ship
  • Local salaries are lower than software/web development
  • You must keep learning new tools and engines constantly

Future outlook

Pakistan's game development industry is growing steadily, driven by mobile gaming, a young population and cheap, skilled labour that attracts foreign outsourcing. Karachi and Lahore are the main hubs. Pay is lower than mainstream software engineering, but freelance and remote work for foreign clients can pay far more than local salaries. Skills in Unity, Unreal and mobile optimisation are in highest demand.

Growing fast

  • Mobile game studios
  • Outsourcing for foreign studios
  • Freelance/remote game development
  • Serious games and gamified apps
  • AR/VR development

Working abroad

Experienced Pakistani game developers are hired by studios in the Middle East, Europe, Canada and Australia; remote work for foreign studios is common and pays much more than local roles.

Your roadmap

Build your game dev foundation in Class 9–10: master Maths, Physics, and start coding.

Milestones

  1. April–May of Class 9

Finish Class 9 board exams with 80%+ in Maths and Science

This keeps every stream open and builds confidence. Focus on understanding, not just memorising.

  2. Summer after Class 9

Complete a basic C# tutorial and share a simple console game

Write a number guessing game or calculator. Upload code to GitHub – it shows initiative.

  3. By December of Class 10

Build your first Unity 2D project

Follow the 'Ruby's Adventure' tutorial on Unity Learn. Publish the build on itch.io for free.

  4. March–May of Class 10

Score 85%+ in Matric/O Level board exams in Maths, Physics, and Computer Science

These marks are used in university merit lists (e.g., FAST, NUST). Every point counts for admission later.

  5. June–July after Class 10

Decide your stream: FSc Pre-Engineering, ICS, or A Level with Maths + CS

Discuss with teachers and research university entry requirements (e.g., NUST NET requires Physics and Maths).

  6. Summer after Class 10

Start the FSc/ICS/A Level syllabus – especially Maths and Programming

Get ahead in Calculus for Unity physics and learn more C# or C++ basics.

What to focus on

  • Core Subjects for Game DevThroughout Class 9 and 10

Mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry) is the engine behind movement and physics in games. Physics (Newton's laws, collision) makes gameplay feel real. Computer Science introduces you to programming logic. English matters for reading docs and working with international clients. Score at least 80% in these subjects in Matric or O Level to keep all FSc/ICS/A Level doors open.

  • Choose the Right Stream After MatricBefore Class 11 (spring of Class 10)

Game development needs a strong maths and stem base. The best FSc groups are Pre-Engineering (for university degrees in CS or SE) or ICS (with Computer Science and Maths). A Level students must take Maths and either Physics or Computer Science. This decision affects university eligibility for BS Computer Science programmes like at Punjab University, FAST, or Bahria.

  • Start Coding Now – Even 15 Minutes a DayAny time in Class 9 or 10

Unity (C#) is the most used game engine in Pakistan. Begin with C# basics on Codecademy or Unity Learn’s free tutorials. Don't wait for college – a small daily coding habit will make your FSc/ICS classes feel easy and give you a head start in game dev projects.

Skills to build

  • Basic Programming (C# or Python)From Class 9 onwards

Start with C# – Unity’s language. Free resources: Unity Learn (learn.unity.com) for beginner scripting, or Codecademy’s free C# course.

  • Game Design ThinkingAnytime

Learn what makes games fun: mechanics, story, feedback. Free: 'The Art of Game Design' book online (author: Jesse Schell) or YouTube channels like Game Maker's Toolkit.

  • Mathematics for GamesDuring Class 10

Master coordinate systems, vectors, and basic trigonometry. Free: Khan Academy courses on 'Linear Algebra' and 'Trigonometry'.

  • Physics for Game DevelopmentAfter Class 10 or alongside FSc

Understand Newton’s laws, momentum, and collision responses. Free: Khan Academy Physics (Class 11 level topics) and PhET simulations.

Competitions

  • School Science & IT ExhibitionsUsually in winter or spring

Many Pakistani schools hold annual exhibitions where you can showcase a simple game you built – great for your CV and confidence.

  • Hour of Code ActivitiesDecember each year

Participate in the global Hour of Code (December) at your school or online. It introduces programming through fun puzzles and mini-games.
