About
Chemical engineers use chemistry, physics and maths to design, build and operate factories that make useful products — petrol and gas, fertiliser, cement, medicines, plastics, food and textiles. In Pakistan they work in refineries, fertiliser plants, cement factories, pharmaceutical companies and energy firms, keeping processes safe, efficient and profitable. It is a core engineering branch, so you study it as a BE/BSc degree and register with PEC.
A day in the life
- 1Check plant readings, temperatures and pressures in the control room
- 2Troubleshoot a unit that is not performing to target
- 3Run calculations to improve yield or cut energy use
- 4Meet safety and maintenance teams about equipment issues
- 5Write reports and prepare production data for managers
- 6Visit the plant floor to inspect equipment and talk to operators
Is this for you
You'll likely enjoy it if
- You like chemistry and maths and can apply them to real problems
- You enjoy seeing how factories and processes actually work

Working abroad
Chemical engineers are in demand in the Gulf (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar) and in countries like Canada and Australia; a PEC-registered BE degree plus experience opens doors.
Your roadmap
Class 9–10: build strong Chemistry, Maths and Physics — the marks that decide your FSc Pre-Engineering seat and later ECAT.
Milestones
End of Class 9
Pass Class 9 annual exams with strong Chemistry, Maths and Physics marks
Aim above 80% in the three science/maths subjects. These are the foundation for FSc and the predictors of your board result.
Early Class 10
Decide your board strategy and get past papers
Collect the last five years of past papers for your board (FBISE, Punjab, Sindh, KPK, Balochistan, AKU-EB) and know the exam pattern chapter-wise.
By winter, Class 10
Complete the full Class 10 syllabus once
Finish the entire textbook for all subjects before send-up exams, so revision time before boards is purely practice, not first reading.
Winter of Class 10, before board results
Shortlist colleges and your FSc group
Visit or research two or three colleges; confirm you will take FSc Pre-Engineering (or ICS with Maths as backup, or A Level Maths + Physics + Chemistry). Check their last year's admission merit percentage.
Spring, Class 10
Sit Matric board exams in spring
Target 80%+ overall with 85%+ in Chemistry, Maths and Physics — these marks feed college merit and some university merit formulas.
Summer after Class 10 results
Secure admission to FSc Pre-Engineering
Apply as soon as results come out — good colleges fill Pre-Engineering seats fast. Submit admission forms with your marksheet and B-form ready.
What to focus on
Chemistry is your core subject — treat it like your future careerThroughout Class 9 and 10
Chemical engineering starts with chemistry. In Class 9–10, master atomic structure, chemical bonding, periodic table, acids/bases and chemical reactions from your board textbook. These exact topics reappear in FSc Chemistry and later in ECAT. Don't just memorise reactions — understand why they happen.
Maths decides whether you can take Pre-EngineeringThroughout Class 9 and 10
FSc Pre-Engineering requires Mathematics, and chemical engineering needs strong maths: algebra, equations, ratios and geometry from Matric are the base for FSc Maths and later calculus. If maths feels weak, fix it now with daily practice — this is the single biggest filter for the Pre-Engineering group.
Physics: build the concepts, not just the formulasThroughout Class 9 and 10
Chemical engineering is applied physics and chemistry in factories. Focus on Class 9–10 physics topics like force, motion, work, energy, heat and pressure — these connect directly to thermodynamics and fluid mechanics you'll study in a BE programme. Solve numericals by hand; ECAT later rewards students who can calculate fast without a calculator habit.
Know which marks will count laterClass 10 board exams, spring
Your Matric board result counts in several places: many government colleges and universities use Matric + FSc marks for admission merit, and some ECAT/merit formulas include Matric percentage. A board result above 80% keeps options open; below 70% closes merit seats at top engineering universities.
Start thinking about the FSc group decision nowWinter of Class 10, before admissions
After Matric you must choose FSc Pre-Engineering, FSc Pre-Medical, ICS, I.Com, FA or A Level. For chemical engineering, Pre-Engineering (Maths + Physics + Chemistry) is the standard route; ICS with Maths is the backup. A Level students should take Mathematics with Physics and Chemistry.
Tests and deadlines
Board exams (Matric / SSC) in springSpring, Class 10
Your board (FBISE, Punjab, Sindh, KPK, Balochistan, AKU-EB) holds Matric exams in spring of Class 10. These marks count toward college admission merit and some university merit formulas later. O Level students sit their exams through Cambridge in the same season. Prepare from your board's past papers — pattern familiarity matters more than extra books.
School internal exams and practicalsClass 9 annual; Class 10 send-ups
Class 9 annual exams and Class 10 send-up/trial exams determine your board exam eligibility and confidence. Physics, Chemistry and Biology practicals carry marks in the board system — learn the experiments properly, not just the written theory.
Skills to build
Fast, accurate mental maths and algebraDaily, 15–20 minutes
Chemical engineers calculate flow rates, concentrations and energy balances daily. Build speed in fractions, percentages, ratios and equation-solving now — no calculator crutch. Free practice: Khan Academy's algebra and arithmetic courses.
Basic physics problem-solvingAlongside Class 9–10 physics
Learn to set up problems step by step (list knowns, unknowns, formula, solve). This habit carries straight into FSc Physics and ECAT. Free: Khan Academy Physics or the Pakistani board lectures on YouTube (e.g. Sabaq Foundation).
Understanding chemistry at the molecular levelWeekends
Use free simulations to see atoms, bonding and reactions instead of only memorising. Free: PhET simulations (phet.colorado.edu) for chemistry topics, plus Sabaq Foundation's board-level chemistry videos.
Study habits and time managementStart now, keep for life
Board exam success in Class 10 is mostly a habits problem. Learn to make a weekly timetable, use active recall and past papers. Free: Khan Academy's 'Learn how to learn' style content or Ali Abdaal's study-technique videos on YouTube.
Basic Excel or Google SheetsClass 10, one hour a week
Chemical engineers live in spreadsheets for data and calculations. Learn formulas, tables and simple charts in Google Sheets — free with a Gmail account via Google's own training and YouTube tutorials.
Competitions
National Science Talent Contest (NSTC)Screening usually announced during the school year
Run through the STEM careers programme for Pakistani students, NSTC screens students in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths. Class 9–10 students with strong science marks can attempt the screening test; it builds the problem-solving depth that later helps in ECAT and engineering studies.
School and board science quizzes and exhibitionsDuring the school year
Most boards and many schools hold science quiz competitions, poster and model exhibitions. Enter with a chemistry or energy-related project — a simple model of a distillation or water-treatment process is a good chemical engineering flavour and looks good on your record.
People to know
Most first jobs and internships come through people. Start early, and keep it simple.
Talk to one engineer or FSc senior each term
Ask a relative, neighbour or your school's alumni whether they studied Pre-Engineering or ICS, and how they chose their college. One 15-minute conversation per term gives you real information about college merit and ECAT that no website has.
Join your school's science club — or start one
If your school has a science society, join and volunteer for exhibitions and quizzes. If not, ask a teacher to help start one with two or three classmates. Organising a chemistry demonstration teaches you more than watching one.
Follow Pakistani engineering universities and PEC online
Follow NED University, UET Peshawar/Lahore, and the Pakistan Engineering Council on Facebook/LinkedIn to see what chemical engineering students and graduates actually do — plant visits, projects, jobs. It keeps the goal concrete while you study Matric.
Keep a simple record of your achievements
Maintain a folder (paper or Google Drive) with your marksheets, certificates from quizzes/olympiads and project photos. When you apply to colleges and later universities, you will need these instantly — and it builds the habit you'll use for LinkedIn later.
What it costs
Government school Matric is nearly free (a few thousand PKR per year); private schools typically PKR 2,000–15,000 per month. Board exam and practical fees are roughly PKR 2,000–5,000. O Level is far costlier: PKR 15,000–50,000+ per month plus Cambridge exam fees per subject.
Scholarships
PEEF (Punjab Educational Endowment Fund) and provincial equivalentsAfter Class 10 board results
PEEF and similar Sindh/KPK/Balochistan funds give scholarships to high-scoring Matric students for FSc. Apply with your board result when the announcement comes — usually through your school.
Board and school position-holder scholarshipsAfter board results
Many boards and private school chains waive FSc fees or give cash awards to students with top Matric positions or 90%+ marks. Ask your school office what they offer.
Ehsaas / BISP education stipendsOngoing during school years
Families registered with BISP can receive education stipends for children staying in school. Check eligibility at the school or the BISP portal.
Sindh Endowment Fund and KPK/FATA scholarshipsAt FSc admission
Provincial endowment and hardship funds support Matric-pass students from low-income families for college. Applications usually go through your college after admission.
